Shakib Al Hasan joins elite list

Chittagong: When he bowled Pakistan's Saeed Ajmal on the fourth day in Mirpur, Shakib Al Hasan became the first Bangladesh player to score a hundred and take a five-for in the same Test, and the 21st overall.
His achievement was the 28th instance of a cricketer recording this feat – Ian Botham did it the most (five) – and Shakib was just the third player to do so in the last 15 years.

The most recent was India's R Ashwin, who in his third Test match scored 103 from the No. 8 spot and 5 for 156 in West Indies' first innings of the epic draw in Mumbai last month. Before that, South African allrounder Jacques Kallis scored an unbeaten 139 and followed it up with 5 for 21 against Bangladesh in 2002. It was Kallis' second instance of this achievement, following 110 and 5 for 90 versus West Indies in 1999.
Just two other players did this during the 90s, Zimbabwe's Paul Strang and Pakistan's Wasim Akram. Against Pakistan at Sheikhupura in 1996, Strang scored 106 not out and 5 for 212 in a draw. Six years prior to that, in June 1990, Akram followed a five-wicket haul in Australia's first innings with a century as Pakistan drew in Adelaide.
Between 1978 and 1984, Botham achieved this distinction five times, most prominently at Headingley in the Ashes series of 1981 when he took 6 for 96 and then famously rescued England after they followed-on, with an epic unbeaten 149. The previous year, during the Golden Jubilee Test in Mumbai, Botham had performed the unprecedented feat of scoring a century and capturing thirteen wickets in a match.
Here is a list of the cricketers to have scored a century and taken a five-wicket haul in the same Test:
1. Jimmy Sinclair (SA) – 106 & 6/26 vs England, 1899
2. Aubrey Faulkner (SA) – 123 & 5/120 vs England, 1910

New Pakistan coach Mohsin

Lahore: The controversy over who would coach the Pakistan team in their upcoming series against England ended when the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced that the team management, including the coach Mohsin Khan would not be changed for the series.
"The team management and national selection committee will remain the same for the England series," PCB chief Zaka Ashraf said.
AFP
Ashraf told reporters that any decision on appointing a new coaching team for Pakistan would now be taken after the series against England.
"Mohsin Khan will continue as coach for the England series after which we will take a decision which is in the best interest of Pakistan cricket," he said.
Asked what would be the PCB's stand if Mohsin coached the national team to a series win over England, Ashraf maintained any decision after the series would be taken keeping in mind the best interest of the team.
Mohsin was relieved from his duties as chief selector in September by the board and brought in as interim coach of the national team after head coach Waqar Younis resigned due to personal and health problems.
Mohsin, a former Test player, has since then coached the national team to Test and one-day series wins over Sri Lanka in the UAE and wins over Bangladesh in the ongoing series in Bangladesh.
Considering that Mohsin has given good results, there was a debate in Pakistan cricket whether the PCB should replace him for the England series.
The debate became intense when the PCB confirmed that it was in discussions with former Australian cricketer Dav Whatmore for the position of head coach.
There were speculations that Whatmore might be appointed the coach before the England series and that he wanted to bring in his own support staff and had asked for powers in selection matters as well.
But Ashraf made it clear that so far the special committee appointed to shortlist, interview and select new coaches for the national team has yet to finalise its candidates.
"We are not changing the team management since the committee is yet to finalise its recommendations to the board.
"We don't know when they will do it but for the England series we have decided to make no changes," said the PCB chief.
A well-placed source said that when Ashraf met the players recently in Dhaka, their feedback on Mohsin might also have influenced him and he must have decided to avoid changes in the team management for the England series.
Mohsin has repeatedly said that he would only continue as head coach and not accept any responsibility of becoming a batting coach for the England series as was reported in the media.

Shakib becomes No. 1 Test allrounder through the world

Shakib Al Hasan, the former Bangladesh captain, has become the No. 1 Test allrounder in the latest ICC rankings following his outstanding performance against Pakistan in Mirpur. Shakib's rise ended Jacques Kallis' lengthy hold on the position.
Shakib Al Hasan was the first Bangladesh player to take a five-for and score a ton in a Test, Bangladesh v Pakistan, 2nd Test, Mirpur, 4th day, December 20, 2011 "Without any doubt it's great news for me and for the country's cricket, and I'm really happy. I have had the self-belief that it will come my way sooner or later because for a long time I was in the top five, so it was a matter of time," Shakib told the Daily Star. "It's fantastic that the performance in the last Test of the year helped me achieve this feat, but it would be much better if we could manage a good result from the last Test match."
Shakib became the first Bangladesh player to score a hundred and take five wickets in an innings during a Test, and his 144 and 6 for 82 won him the Man-of-the-Match award. The century was Shakib's second in Tests and it lifted his average to 34.68. He averages 31.36 with the ball and has 96 Test wickets. Pakistan, however, won the Mirpur Test to take the series 2-0.
Kallis, who made 31 and went wicketless in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Centurion, was the No. 1 allrounder for 3696 days and will have the chance to reclaim the top position during the final two matches of that series in Durban and Cape Town.
Daniel Vettori, Shane Watson and Stuart Broad complete the top allrounders list in Test cricket.
