Shakib Al Hasan joins elite list

Chittagong: When he bowled Pakistan's Saeed Ajmal on the fourth day in Mirpur, Shakib Al Hasan became the first Bangladesh player to score a hundred and take a five-for in the same Test, and the 21st overall.
His achievement was the 28th instance of a cricketer recording this feat – Ian Botham did it the most (five) – and Shakib was just the third player to do so in the last 15 years.

The most recent was India's R Ashwin, who in his third Test match scored 103 from the No. 8 spot and 5 for 156 in West Indies' first innings of the epic draw in Mumbai last month. Before that, South African allrounder Jacques Kallis scored an unbeaten 139 and followed it up with 5 for 21 against Bangladesh in 2002. It was Kallis' second instance of this achievement, following 110 and 5 for 90 versus West Indies in 1999.
Just two other players did this during the 90s, Zimbabwe's Paul Strang and Pakistan's Wasim Akram. Against Pakistan at Sheikhupura in 1996, Strang scored 106 not out and 5 for 212 in a draw. Six years prior to that, in June 1990, Akram followed a five-wicket haul in Australia's first innings with a century as Pakistan drew in Adelaide.
Between 1978 and 1984, Botham achieved this distinction five times, most prominently at Headingley in the Ashes series of 1981 when he took 6 for 96 and then famously rescued England after they followed-on, with an epic unbeaten 149. The previous year, during the Golden Jubilee Test in Mumbai, Botham had performed the unprecedented feat of scoring a century and capturing thirteen wickets in a match.
